Roxy - a VERY SPECIAL MALINOIS excellent at agility & playing ball's Description.
Roxy is a very typical Belgian Shepherd Malinois and is an highly intelligent and attentive, wary of strangers but not timid or aggressive. She is extremely human centric and wants to be with you and to please you all the time. She will follow you everywhere to be by your side. Like all Belgians she is protective of her family, but does not do well if left alone for long periods of time.
She is an athletic, agile, graceful, and elegant Belgian Shepherd so would do well in agility or fly-ball as she is quick, light-footed and loves to play ball. She needs to be challenged and exercised daily or otherwise she will go and find something to do or become naughty.
Belgians need both physical exercise and mental exercise (advanced obedience, agility, herding, or tracking sports are ideal). Belgian Shepherds become bored, frustrated, and prone to obsessive behaviors without something to do.
This breed is sensitive to correction, so she requires a light hand on the leash . . BUT she also knows her own mind, so you must project firmness and leadership at all times.
Belgian Shepherds have lightning-quick reflexes and reactions, which means your "timing" in giving commands, signals, praise, and corrections must be spot-on, else they will already be off and doing something else.
Belgians are also adept at reading your facial expressions and body language that they pick up every subtle movement you make and are constantly anticipating what you're going to do next. It can be disconcerting when your Belgian seems to be reading your mind and staying one step ahead of you. Indeed, this clever dog must be owned and handled by someone who is smarter and more capable than she is and who can stay one step ahead of her.
The Malinois is frequently used by law enforcement as a police dog, or in the defence forces and in rescue. This is due to their quick mind, intelligence and physical endurance of the working dog.
